Makin’ It Better: Yahoo! Music Jukebox 2.0.2

“I thought I told you that we won’t stop, I thought I told you that we won’t stop.”

- Puff Daddy (a.k.a Diddy) from 112’s “Only You”)

See, the last time I talked Yahoo! Music Jukebox, I told you we’re committed to cranking out performance and stability improvements to this young product. In fact, we call it Qprm! That’s QPRM – Quality, Performance, Reliability, Maintainability. Say it loud, say it proud: Qprm!

Why Qprm? Because everyone I talk to about Yahoo! Music Jukebox just wants it to work better, work faster, get everything in it now to be solid before adding any new features. So, that’s what we’re hammering on. 2.0.1 was a step in that direction. YMJ 2.0.2 is another – and it was released today.

Download Yahoo! Music Jukebox 2.0.2

Some of my favorite things about this release:

Better management of the “working set.” This is the big memory number that shows up when you look in Task Manager. Since YMJ uses both IE and WMP for some functions, this is still not a svelte number, but we’ve heard the complaints and are getting better about how we use your RAM.

Crossfade works for everyone again! Never shoulda let this one go, but we fixed it.

A lot of the dreaded Fatal Exceptions are history, thanks to some improved code management.

Proper shutdown of the executable when you close it. This was a silent killer for some people causing problems re-opening YMJ.

Improved CPU performance when starting YMJ for users with a lot of playlists. We found a better way to grab your playlists from the server when starting up, making launching YMJ slightly less painful.

And, on it goes. Over 80 other bugs were knocked out in Yahoo! Music Jukebox 2.0.2 as well. I hope you give this release a try and let me know what you think. I know we haven’t fixed everything, so let me know what you’d like to see improved next.

  2. Changelog for the 80+ changes?
I’ve been having problems with the Launchcast stations freezing.

    Thanks for the update.
I’ve been waiting for a while for this.

  3. I can only DL this from IE now?

    And what is this?

“As part of the installation process, we will need to check your computer to determine what Verizon Yahoo! software is currently installed. If any updates are available, you will have the option of installing those as well.

Click the Start button when you are ready to proceed.”

Does anyone have a direct link to the software?
    This is ridiculous…

  4. so good to see an update! any hints on when the focus will shift to adding new features? the time is now with all rhapsody and urge are doing.

I notice Home went away. I guess you figure the recommendations are on the Unlimited screen, but I already miss Home. The beauty of Home was that the section dedicated to my ratings-related recommendations was right there front and center. Now I have to scroll down under Unlimited fluff that doesn’t mean anything to me. and it’s just songs. to get to album or artist recommendations throws me to another page rather than the cool tabs Home had. I understand it’s a better use of space, but the better step would have been to build Home into My Y! so I could see my recommendations, my similar members, my ratings, my playlists, top artists/albums/tracks (by playcount and rating). Just an idea.

  5. Glad to hear it, also glad that you made a post about the update. Please keep up that habit!

Have you considered implementing the Jukebox for Vista (using WPF), similar to Messenger?

  6. to: resource.. that’s not intended behavior at all. You shouldn’t need IE to download.. I’m looking into that

  9. BUG REPORT:

Double-clicking on an album in “icon view” no longer plays the album. The album has to be in “name view” in order to be able to double-click the album to play it.

  10. How about a fix for Y!MJ on 64-bit Vista? I can’t get it to run because the Sonic CD burning portion isn’t getting installed. I keep getting the following error:

YahooMusicEngine.exe – Unable To Locate Component

This application has failed to start because PX.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

    [OK]

I contacted support, and their solution was to cancel my Y!MU account…

  12. On the unlimited page, there’s no play all button for the recommendations anymore.

Also – if you guys want a good direction to go in: Find a way to allow your catalog to be browsed/searched from a network media player. Rhapsody has that with the sansa and what not, and the closest I got was the dlink 320/520 advertising that, but turns out it only allows you to play playlists or songs in your library. FYI, I wrote a quick review on the 520, the 320, and how it works out for Yahoo Unlimited Customers – http://fredrickville.com/?board=6&n=105

  13. I’d love to be able to manage which machines I currently have activated. Perhaps a screen showing the computers I have activated and be able to deactivate them (without having to be using that machine)… handy for when you forget to deactivate a machine before reimaging/formatting.

Napster have this feature and limit you to one deactivation per month (which is reasonable).

  14. Dear Mick O:

Thanks for posting the list of issues resolved. What about my two “favorite” bugs:

    1) volume leveling was non-functional. It seems to be better now, but I can’t tell if it was actually fixed, or not.

    2) CD ripping was broken: I posted this on the YMJ message board on Dec. 30th, but nobody responded. When ripping more than about 8 or 10 CDs, YMJ crashes with a command (DOS) box pop up, containing this error: “OMP Run-time library: currently configured to support a maximum of 32 threads. OMP abort: Please specify a larger value via the KMP_ALL_THREADS environment variable to raise this limit.”

Less urgent, but would be nice to fix:

What about all the endless users posting “would you reset my machine count?” Why not add a self-service feature to do this…it sure would save you folks from having to do it for the users. A nice dialog box to say “You may use Yahoo Music Unlimited on up to three machines. You are currently licensed to use it on . Please select a PC to deactivate. To prevent abuse, you may deactivate a maximum of PCs per month.”

What about those of us who bought the “lifetime upgrade” to MMJB Plus? Still waiting for a way to convert that to YMJ-Plus. I recently paid for one release-worth of YMJ-Plus, to get the faster CD ripping (which is broken) and I don’t want to pay again.

Finally, a suggestion: Yahoo! knows my music tastes down to the gnat’s a__, because I volunteered it. So, why not data mine that info to only serve me targeted banner ads in YMJ? I am sure your advertisers would appreciate a higher click-through rate if I saw ads for music I would actually listen to, and buy, and thus, you could charge more for the ads? I really don’t want to see ads for rappers or teen-pop-artist-of-the-week every time I log on. It’s like the pop up ads for X10 that everyone got 10 years ago. It’s SPAM. Targeting is where it’s at today.

    Thanks for listening. –Steve

  15. Thanks for the release notes.
This version uses less RAM, closes and opens better than before.

Some other basics that still need fixing…

    1) Remember library preferences such as Track #, Disc # and that I don’t want Burnable and other info displayed. I have to set this every single time.

    2) Remember whether I want to browse by album, artist, genre so I don’t have to set this each time.

    3) Name View or Icon View – I’m tired of setting this everyday.

    4) Allow the highlighting of more than one track in the library to drag to a playlist. I don’t know why feature was removed.

    5) Launchcast stations repeat songs while displaying new song info…

  19. I recently upgraded my machine and installed Vista Business x64. When I attempt to install YM Jukebox, it pops up an error stating I have insufficient memory, 64MB is required. Is this an issue due to Vista x64 or that I have 4GB of memory? I could run YM Jukebox in a virtual Win XP machine, but that’s somewhat of a pain to have to do every time I want to fire it up.

  20. [...] Yahoo! Music Jukebox 2.0.2.038:Now u can say Yahooo Yahoo Music Jukebox is a fully featured media player an organizer with many powerful features. Its features include CD ripping and burning, access to LAUNCHcast and the Yahoo! Music Unlimited music subscription service, playlist creation, transfer of music to select portable devices such as mp3 players and USB flash drives. The program allows Yahoo! Messenger users to stream music to one another (not to be confused with uploading and downloading or filesharing) and browse one another’s playlists. Only those subscribed to Yahoo! Unlimited can add entire songs to their collections, however. The engine also has a number of plugins available for free download from the program’s official website. 21. Emayoh… do you guys even test the network music functionality? If I turn on that plugin, and I view my boss’ music from his rhapsody, after about 30 seconds (And it says fetching network music…), I get a fatal exception.

I was really hoping that would be fixed in this version. My boss makes fun of me for having YMU instead of Rhapsody because of all the crashes. I’m really disappointed. He tells me “Just think of all the money you’re saving.” in a facetious way.

I have to admit, his Rhapsody does seem a lot better. His network music works, and he has a lot more music available to him, it would seem. I’m kind of sad that I paid for 2 years in advance… but at least it’s a little cheaper.

  23. I echo my thanks for what appears to be a less CPU hungry app. Two issues:
    1. I don’t know if this is a memory leak or what… But the app was using 19MB this morning. Now it’s up to almost 40MB. Then, when I close it, the memory usage goes up to about 50MB for the YahooMusicEngine.exe application and it never actually exits. I tried choosing exit from the taskbar icon again, with still no success. I killed the process after several minutes…
    2. The transparency settings for mini mode are not retained. Go to mini mode by pressing ALT-N. Click the mini window and ALT+Mouse scroll wheel to change transparency. Go back to full mode, then back to mini mode. The window will be opaque, instead of keeping your transparency settings changes.

    Thanks for the continued work.

    Comment by kairn — February 12, 2007 #

  24. Thanks for the fixes. I still see a few issues.
    1. The memory usage increases from about 20MB to 40MB. Memory leak?
    2. The program often doesn’t want to exit. I’ll see yahoomusicengine.exe still running for a very long time (taking up 40+MB of memory). In fact I don’t know how long it will keep running, as I’ve always killed the process after 5+ minutes.
    3. The transparency settings for mini mode are not retained. Go to mini mode. Change the transparency settings by ALT+mouse wheel. Go to full mode. Go back to mini mode. The mini mode window will be opaque. This is a new problem.

  27. Uh, is there any chance that Yahoo Music will release STANDALONE installers of iterations of Jukebox? In 2.0.2.04, I encountered a serious bug, since confirmed by tech support. Whenever I try to access “My Music,” by clicking on the left column’s button, Jukebox freezes.

    Every time.

Another friend installed it on his home computer, and the same thing happened.

Curiously, he upgraded on a computer at work, and has not encountered the same issue.

I’m wondering, also, whether Yahoo Music will notifiy me as to when the bug is fixed, or will it just be another version upgrade that you are notified about when logging on from within Jukebox?!??

  28. Since getting ver 2.0.2, I have been unable to use YMJ to Copy mp3 podcast files to my Dell axim. I get an error pop-up Stating: “The device does not support this file type”. The axim uses WMP mobile and it certainly does support mp3 files. I have no problem copying Y! Unlimited or any other wma files. It was nice to use YMJ to manage all of my mobile music. The previous version of YMJ worked great for that.

Any idea why this was changed?

    Comment by freeheelmike — February 14, 2007 #

  29. v. 2.0.2.042 has a MAJOR bug in it. I wish it only happened to me, but it has been confirmed (not publically) by tech support and also by another friend who had the same thing happen on his computer after the upgrade:

If, after logging in, you go to prefs and confirm that all of your file paths are correct, then press “My Music” under “Yahoo Unlimited,” jukebox will freeze. On two of three computers that I know of that have the latest build, this happens every time. On one computer, it doesn’t happen. Haven’t a clue why. They’re all XP Pro.

Yahoo Music should release standalone installers.
I guess that isn’t possible with the current way things are, eh?

Well, if not, then there should be an option, somewhere, somehow to return to a previous version that was working then.

It is somewhat curious as to why the new release has not been pulled after this bug has been discovered and confirmed. Risky business choice not to, imho.

Warn your friends: Do not do this upgrade until further notice.

  31. Hi guys, is there any change to have a feature that auto update the DRM licenses? i.e. I have the YMJ installed on my laptop and on my Media Center PC at home. This PC is connected to my Xbox360 and a D-link DSM320 UPnP extender. Sometimes I take several days to open the YMJ on the PC, so the licenses expire and the musics can’t the listened using the Media Extenders.
If the YMJ is already running on my system tray, it could check the license server from time to time and renew the subscription automatically.

    What you guys think?

    Comment by acarlos — February 15, 2007 #

  32. Thanks guys. A couple of problems: In mini-mode, transparency settings and location are not retained when you switch to full mode then back to mini mode. Also, the memory usage continually increases. It’s been running all day and went from about 20MB to over 40MB.

There is no phone support and when people see Rhapsody they get a little jealous that YMJ doesn’t have those features.
