What’s New Pussycat: Yahoo! Music Jukebox Update

Posted by emayoh, October 13, 2006 at 1:59 am, in YMusicBlog General, Yahoo! Music Unlimited. 9 Comments

Hey everyone,

201Yahoo! Music Jukebox 2.0.1 is now live and available for download. This release was focused on improving quality, performance, reliability, and maintainability. It’s the first in a series of steps we’ll be taking to address those areas and bring YMJ to where it needs to be for our millions of music-hungry friends out there. It’s a small, but important, advance and a sign of good things to come.

What’s new in version 2.0.1 from 2.0? Some highlights…

  • Improved CPU resource usage during playback (when not using EQ)
  • Fixed XSPF playlists that include local files
  • Reduced file size of installer
  • Improved transfers to some portable devices
  • Fixed crash when dropping non-audio file into player
  • Fixed hang during LAUNCHcast playback when network connection drops
  • Many more…

Get it here: http://music.yahoo.com/jukebox/

Expect more improvements in the coming months as we identify more ways to make YMJ better. As always, your feedback is welcomed.

Cheers,

Mick O.
YMJ Product Manager

  1. Sounds good.
Is there a full changelog available?

Things I’d like in the future:

    - Option for full 0-100 rating scale instead of the 4 star system.

    - Easy option to switch between bookmark of track and download of track

    - Video support and downloads of Launch videos for devices like AOL Music Now allows.

    - Video podcasts

    - Community playlists like Urge or iTunes has.

    - Cover art updating.

    - No system tray icon and easier closing of program.

    - Direct download of the .EXE Installer instead of the download manager.

I just paid for two years of YMU and I’m figuring out what it can and can’t do.

So far, it’s been fairly good but I still need to use iTunes for certain things.

  2. I second the request for a changelog.

The feature I long for the most is the ability to easily browse ALL the music in the Yahoo Unlimited library. Let’s say I want to know ALL the artists I can listen to in the Alternative Rap genre. I can only browse Yahoo’s recommendations or Yahoo’s charts. I want the ability to look at a list of all the artists that I can sort by name or popularity. Rhapsody has that feature and Yahoo’s developers are way better than Real’s so can we get this feature, please?

  3. Hi resource,

YMJ does have some community playlist features available now. If you want to make a playlist public to the whole YMJ community, go to one of your playlists and select ‘make it public’ in the upper-right hand corner.

You can also select ‘Playlists’ in the search drop-down to find other people’s playlists by artist/song content, username of the playlist creator or keyword (like ‘dance’, ‘workout’ or ‘party’).

We’re working on some ways to make it easier for you to share your playlists or find playlists made by others.

  4. I would also really like to see release notes/change logs that are easier to find.
In addition I think it would cool if playlists were more like tags… in the usability sense. I’d like to be able to go to a song and easily enter multiple tags and then be able to play a group of songs in a tag (basically a playlist but to me the concept of tags are more fluid and there would be less clicking… maybe implemented similar to tags for playlists).
The problem I had the most in the past was also YMJ not closing down properly and it seemed to use lots of memory and cpu. I just upgraded to 2.0.1.37 so hopefully I won’t have those problems anymore. Thanks for the list of changes :)

  5. As I’ve posted before- Here’s something really poorly done: In “my music”, each song is listed separately in the main frame. So if I’ve rated an Artist or Album, that rating will not show up in My Music!! A browse by Artist or Album should group the songs in one line, and show your rating if you’ve rating that album or group.
Also, the “last played” and “# plays” columns do not work.

Does anyone actually use YMJ before it gets released? After I used it for 10 minutes I could see a lot of obvious deficiencies. Lots of folks here and on other message boards identify really obvious oversights, none of which seem ever to be addressed. The lack of support and improvement is incredible. Rhapsody and Napster actually reply to customer concerns. Yahoo seems to lose interest after they get our money.

I apologize for my tone, but it is so frustrating.

  6. I think that the performance has gotten worse in 2.0.1.037

    YMJ Imported music identifier &
    Yahoo! AV Media Server
Are still spinning out of control and consuming 1 full processor a piece.

Send me a message if you want more info about the threads that running.

  7. So if I have a playlist in iTunes, can I transfer that playlist into a Yahoo Music Jukebox playlist?
