Firefox Support for Yahoo! Music Videos

Y! Music Videos and Firefox

We’ve taken a lot of crap over the past couple of years for not having any Firefox support, or even a reasonable error message, with our massively popular Music Videos offering. Thanks to a finally-working Active X plugin for Firefox, Music Videos now play just fine in Firefox 1.5, and our error messages when we can’t play you a video for technical reasons are now circa 2006, even on the Mac.

Mac nerds: we have not forgotten about you. You’re next on our list. Would be most helpful if Microsoft would build a scriptable version of the Windows Media plugin for your platform, but we’ve given up on relying on our pals in Redmond for that. Don’t hold your breath, but we will get there eventually, one way or another. You are loved and we’re trying to figure out the best way to get Music Videos to you. Promise.

  1. Are there any thoughts on moving to Flash video, so that all platforms are supported equally?

  3. Great news, Ian, but when will Launch Audio start working for Firefox? I would have thought the Radio portion would have been ported before the Video portion or, at the very least, at the same time.

  4. My advise is to switch to using quicktime, per say quicktime works on mac/pc and linux using mplayer or totem. I have to say quicktime is a lot better for content streaming. Windows Media keeps disconnecting alot especially for those on dial up but for those who are on dial up/broadband quicktime “just works”. I dont think you will have much luck with windows media player on the mac as it’s been discountinued and pretty much has errors on Mac OS X Tiger.

  5. I’m glad you’re supporting Firefox now, though I don’t think you should be using ActiveX – Flash is the way to go.

    Also, it’s still difficult to use Yahoo! Music in Firefox. When I first tried playing a video, the area where the video was supposed to play was blank. I had to search the internet before I found this blog post and then discovered I had to install another plugin. In other words, I wasn’t prompted on music.yahoo.com when I first tried playing a video to install the Mozilla ActiveX plugin – I just got a blank space.

    But I really hope that you switch to Flash, because ActiveX is just a pain, and I’d rather not have to use it within Firefox anyway.

  6. I’d like to know why you are using proprietary stuff like Active X instead of more mainstream stuff like flash. YouTube, Google Video, and several others do it, and the compatability is much much higher. Apple, Linux, Windows, and a plethora of browsers can handle it.
